How a mobile glass job actually goes
- You call or send the form with the machine model and which pane broke. A photo speeds everything up.
- We price it against this table and give you one firm number, including travel, before anything is scheduled.
- Flat glass: we cut it at the machine. The broken pane comes out, the pattern is lifted from the frame, and laminated or tempered stock is cut and set in fresh rubber or urethane the same visit.
- Curved glass: we order by serial number. The OEM part usually lands in two to four days and we install the day it arrives.
- The machine goes back to work. Urethane-bonded windshields need a short cure before rough duty; rubber-set panes are ready immediately.
The glass itself, and why spec matters
Front glazing on equipment follows the same safety glazing standard as road vehicles, FMVSS 205, which incorporates ANSI Z26.1. In practice that means laminated glass in front of the operator, because laminated holds together around an impact instead of raining pebbles into the cab. Side and rear positions are commonly tempered.
Operator visibility is not a comfort item. OSHA's material handling equipment rules, 29 CFR 1926.602, assume the operator can see, and a hazed or cracked pane in the sightline is the kind of thing a site safety officer can and will tag a machine over. Replacing a $500 pane beats explaining a struck-by incident.
For demolition and forestry duty we quote polycarbonate instead of glass in exposed positions. Poly costs more per pane and scratches faster, but it does not break when a limb or a brick tests it, which is the entire job description on those sites.
Cost questions, answered straight
Why does the same excavator windshield cost $400 on one machine and $1,500 on another?
Curvature. A flat upper or lower pane can be cut from laminated stock at the machine for $400 to $800 installed. A curved windshield only exists as an OEM part ordered by serial number, and the part alone can cost more than a whole flat-glass job.
Is it cheaper to bring the machine somewhere?
Almost never. Transporting an excavator costs several hundred dollars in lowboy time before anyone touches glass, and dealer installed jobs commonly run $700 to $1,800. Mobile service removes the transport line entirely.
Does equipment insurance cover cab glass?
Often, yes. Inland marine equipment policies frequently carry glass coverage with a low or zero deductible, separate from collision. Check your policy schedule or ask your agent about glass before paying cash on a $1,200 curved windshield.
What does the rock chip repair actually do?
Resin is injected into the chip under vacuum, restoring most of the pane strength and stopping the crack from running. At $120 to $220 it is the best money in this table, but only while the damage is still a chip.
